Tragedy hits Schiller Park

Richard III Actor's Theatre

Reviewed by Darryl Holbrook

If your're looking for a timeless classic and quality entertainment, take a stroll through Schiller Park one evening. This season, Actor's Theatre has once again captured the attention of Columbus audiences with their inspiring production of William Shakespeare's legendary Richard III.

One of Shakespeare's earlier works, Richard III is based loosely on historical fact, depicting Richard as a cold blooded and ruthless man attempting to further his own interests. A murderous plot ensues, born from greed and self-interest which results in a chilling outcome. As the language used in Richard III tends to be powerful and unsophisticated (unlike Shakespeare's later works which can weigh the audience down with noble poetics), our contemporary culture will find it both understandable and thought provoking.

The familiar cast gives a powerful and colorful performance on a well thought out set which blends beautifully into the oasis of Schiller Park. The original music and period costumes assist in transporting the audience into a forgotten time, while the vigorous pace of the production will keep you riveted till the very end.

Actor's Theatre, which dropped "Summer" from its name, is now in its 13th season and committed to providing year-round programming with free or low cost professional productions to the audiences of central Ohio. Actors' Theatre is able to consistently provide live theatre by way of grants and donations. To contribute call 444-6888.

Richard III is now playing in Schiller Park, German Village at 8 pm., Wednesday through Saturday, until August 20. Blankets and lawn chairs are recommended, along with a nice bottle of chablis. Take a friend and enjoy an evening under the stars in the company of Richard III.

A seance with Barrymore

I Hate Hamlet

Weathervane Playhouse

reviewed by Tamayla Turner

I took a refreshing road trip to Newark, Ohio August 6 to see I Hate Hamlet at the Weathervane Playhouse. The play is about an actor named Andrew Ralley, played by Eddie Collins. He moves into the same apartment that the late great Shakespeare actor John Barrymore used to occupy. Felicia, the real estate broker who found Andrew the apartment, believes that she can reach her mother by seance, and through her mother she can then contact the ghost of John Barrymore so he can give Andrew some tips on how to play Hamlet. The fun starts when Andrew, Felicia, and Andrew's agent Lillian Troy hold their seance.

Glenn Hurst appears in the role of John Barrymore, rising from the dead. Barrymore, a notorious alcoholic, says, "I am either dead or incredibly drunk." The play is a funny ongoing battle between Barrymore and Andrew, because Barrymore wants to convince Andrew of the true art in playing Hamlet, versus doing cheap cereal commercials.

Tiffany Marshall, as Felicia, is a dramatic eccentric and carries a heavy New York accent. Lisa K. Barnett as Lillian Troy is Andrew's agent. She's in her middle fifties,

coughs a smoker's hack, and doesn't think she should have to ask permission to smoke. Glenn Hurst plays John Barrymore well, and is extremely handsome in black tights. He takes Shakespeare very seriously and he appears often with drink in hand.

Andrew's girlfriend Deidre is a 29-yearold virgin, which she tells everyone. Not having sex for six months is kind of getting on Andrew's nerves.

Gary, who is played by Michael Kirsten, was very funny, or I should say, was purposely obnoxious and funny. I enjoyed this play and the Weathervane atmosphere very much. I would encourage everyone to try to obtain tickets to some of the performances that they will be doing in the future.

Weathervane will complete its 26th season this year. The stage and setting is quite different from what I was expecting. You feel as if you are under a roof (enclosed), but you also feel that you are partly outside due to the canvas enclosure. The seats are new, large and quite comfortable. There is an intermission where you can purchase refreshments and take them back to your seat. There are restrooms and plenty of wall space for pictures, dates and names of many performers and performances.

Weathervane Playhouse is located at 100 Price Rd., Newark. For ticket information, call 366-4616.
